The Maplewood Receation Department announced you can begin early pool registration on March 15.

And with the new higher fees, more than 30%, you'll need that early discount:

Registration for the Early bird fees for the Maplewood Community Pool will start on March 15, 2012. Online registration will begin at 8:00am and those who wish to do it in person can come in to the office at 574 Valley Street, begining at 9:00am. No payments can be accepted prior to the start date. The early bird rates run from March 15th until April 30th.

When payment is made your cards from last year will be reactivated. If you are new, or your children have gotten older and look different, and/or have lost a photo ID you will be required to come to the offce and have a photo taken.

We know that keeping publicly spent dollars in town will help our economic revitalization efforts. Here is the release the Democratic Committee put out seeking candidates and district leaders:

The Maplewood Democratic Committee invites all those interested in being considered for the Committee’s endorsement for the June 2012 Democratic Primary for Members of the Township Committee to submit a letter of interest and resume. Township residents will choose two citizens to serve on the Township Committee for the term running from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2015. The Maplewood Democratic Committee will be endorsing two Democratic candidates who will run in the Democratic Primary on June 5, 2012.

If interested, please submit a letter of interest and resume to Ian Grodman, Chair of the Maplewood Democratic Committee, by March 15 at 5:00pm. Letters and resumes should be forwarded by email to igrodman@vag-grodman.com.

District Leaders

The work of the Maplewood Democratic Committee is performed by 2 district leaders from each of the 21 voting districts in Maplewood. The 42 District Leaders are involved in choosing the endorsed candidates of the committee, and campaigning on behalf of all Democratic candidates, from candidates for Township Committee, to the President.

This year presents an unusual opportunity for anyone interested in becoming more involved in the Democratic Party and political life in general. There are some district leader seats that will be vacated in June of this year, and new district leaders will be needed in this presidential election year.

All district leader candidates will appear on the ballot along with the Committee’s endorsed candidates for Township Committee and President Obama in the June 5 Primary.

SCHOOL BOARD AIMING FOR 2% TAX HIKE LIMIT

PATCH with a great take on the school district budget, which counts for most of our property taxes:

The South Orange-Maplewood Board of Education gave approval to a preliminary 2012-2013 school budget of $114.9 million on Monday night, March 5. The Board of School Estimate will vote on the proposed $101,959,453 tax levy to support the budget at a public meeting on March 28.

That tax levy represents a 2% increase over last year's budget. District Business Administrator Cheryl Schneider pointed out that the district is allowed to go as high as 3.48% this year due to adjustments and banked cap, but did not do so because of awareness of the tax strain on residents as well as clear indications from the Board of School Estimate that an increase of greater than 2% would not be supported.

Schneider noted that an increase in state aid this year -- while not bringing the district back to historic levels before drastic cuts in 2009 -- helped the district avert some painful cuts in staffing. State aid rose from $3,592,077 for 2011-2012 to $4,135,298 in 2012-13.

On Tuesday night, Maplewood Township Committee members agreed to adjustments to a draft 2012 municipal budget that would allow them to introduce the budget in ordinance form at the rate of a 2% tax levy increase over the 2011 budget.

Committee members made the decision on March 6 to increase use of the current fund surplus by $301,000, increase use of capital fund surplus by $200,000, and apply $740,000 from the sale of town-owned property at 125 Dunnell Road (the former police station site) in order to close a gap that would have set the tax levy above the state-mandated 2% level. The town does have adjustments and banked cap that it could apply, allowing it to raise the levy above the 2% level.

Several Township Committee members responded to a request for comment on the death of Rep. Donald Payne, congressman from the 10^th District and Maplewood’s representative in Washington, D.C.

Payne, 77, lost a battle with colon cancer and had been New Jersey’s first African-American elected to Congress.

Jerry Ryan – “More than just a good representative, Donald was a good man. I'm sorry for this loss, and hope that his family's comforted by the wonderful memories of all that he was.”

Marlon Brownlee – “I was very saddened to hear of the death of Congressman Donald Payne this morning. He was a tireless advocate for human rights around the world and I was proud to have him as my representative in Congress. He was a man whose commitment to public service I definitely admired. I had the pleasure of meeting him on a number of occasions and he was always a true gentleman as well. He and his family are in my prayers....may he rest in peace.”

Kathy Leventhal - “A truly great public servant whose spirit will live on.”

India Larrier – “I was saddened to hear of Donald Payne's passing. The Congressman set a very high bar. He was a compassionate, savvy and principled statesman. I will remember him for his tireless and lengthy effort on behalf of the communities he represented, as well as those people in need across the country and around the world. I know, personally, that he was a mentor and positive role model to countless people. He will be greatly missed and never matched. His family and his staff have my prayers and condolences.”

CONGRESSMAN DONALD PAYNE DIES

Maplewood's man in Washington, Democrat Donald Payne, passed away today from a long fight with colon cancer.

He was the first African-American from New Jersey to serve in Congress, representing the 10th congressional district that includes most of Maplewood. He was 77.

I recall interviewing him back in 1989, a class act.

SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES SECONDARY CURRICULUM CHANGES

PATCH reports:

After three months of discussion and public meetings, the South Orange-Maplewood Board of Education approved proposals to reduce academic placement levels in the middle schoolsand high school and introduce the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme in the middle schools.

The middle school restructuring proposal was the most contentious proposal -- eliciting many comments at meetings and online both for and against. However, that proposal passed by a vote of 7-2 (with Wayne Eastman and Mark Gleason dissenting). The high school restructuring proposal passed by a vote of 8 in favor and one against (Eastman). The IB proposal for the middle schools passed unanimously.

UNLOCKED VEHICLE THEFT SPREE TOPS POLICE BEAT

February 27, 2012: Theft from Vehicles. On 2/27/12, the police department received four separate reports of theft from an unlocked vehicle in the southeast area of the township. The thefts occurred on Jacoby Street, Menzel Avenue, and Van Ness Terrace and are each believed to have occurred during the overnight hours. Residents are reminded to keep their vehicles secured, and asked to notify the police immediately if suspicious activity is observed.

February 27, 2012: Weapons Possession (Arrest Made). On 2/27/12, officers J. DeFazio and B. Rodrigues responded to the area of Academy St. and Beach St. on a suspicious person report from a resident. Upon arrival, officers observed an individual matching the description provided by the caller and conducted a field investigation. The male, later identified as Gabriel Hidalgo, 32, of 407 Irvington Ave., South Orange, NJ advised officers that he was in possession of two knives. Officers then recovered an eight inch carving knife concealed in Hidalgo’s waistband area. Hidalgo was placed in custody, and during a search incident to his arrest, officers also recovered two small baggies of suspected marijuana. Hidalgo was subsequently processed on charges of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose and Possession of Marijuana under 50 grams.

February 27, 2012: Attempt Burglary. On 2/27/12, a Florida Street resident reported that an unknown suspect had apparently tried to gain entry to his home by damaging the front and rear doors to the residence. The incident reportedly occurred between 2/25/12 and 2/27/12 at approximately 2:00 pm. The Detective Bureau is investigating.

March 3, 2012: Warrant Arrest. On 3/3/12, Officer T. DiMaggio was patrolling in the area of Jacoby Street when he observed a male acting suspiciously. When the male entered a waiting vehicle, Officer DiMaggio conducted a motor vehicle stop and subsequently identified the subject as Dion L. Cruz, 27, of 19 Brown Street, Maplewood. Officers determined that there were two active criminal warrants for his arrest. Cruz was additionally charged with Hindering Apprehension for providing false information to a law enforcement officer.

NJ TRANSIT STICKS IT TO US AGAIN

NJ Transit, not satisfied with raising fares when needed, will now slap a $5 charge on you if you dare buy a ticket on the train.

In the past, the deal was that they would do this if there was a ticket office open at the station where you boarded. No such luck now.

Since March 1, even if the ticket office is closed, you get hit because you did not use the ticket machine now at every station.

If you are running for the train and just make it, tough luck!

DEER HUNT MAY END

The same day that Essex County revealed 76 deer had been bagged in South Mountain Reservation during the recent deer hunt last month, Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo said because it was the lowest amount in five years, it may not be needed in the future.

"Whether we're going to have the deer culling program next year is under discussion," he said.

LATEST SOUTH MOUNTAIN DEER KILL BAGS 79

Essex County finished its deer hunt program, reporting that 79 live and unborn deer were killed in South Mountain Reservation, part of the program that also included Eagle Rock and Hilltop reservations in January and February.

A total of 274 deer were removed from the three locations, with rules requiring hunters to turn over the deer meat to the Food Bank beyond a certain amount.

The county release on the program stated:

This year, about 3,700 pounds of venison were donated to the Community FoodBank of New Jersey in Hillside, which translates into about 15,000 meals made available to the needy and homeless. Volunteer marksmen who completed at least six (6) half-day shifts of volunteer service received 40 pounds of venison.

February 21, 2012: Burglary. On 2/21/12, officers and detectives responded to a Raymond Terrace residence on a report of a burglary. The homeowner reported that between the hours of 11:00 am and 12:15 pm, unknown suspect(s) forced open a rear door to gain access to the residence. Once inside, the unknown suspect(s) removed a Gateway Laptop computer and an assortment of jewelry including a wedding ring and an engagement ring.

February 21, 2012: Attempt Burglary. On 2/21/12, officers responded to a North Terrace residence on a report of an attempted burglary. The homeowner reported that between the hours of 8:00 am and 3:00 pm, unknown suspect(s) attempted to gain access to the residence by removing the screens from two rear windows and a second floor window. The Youth Aid Bureau is investigating.

February 22, 2012: Package Theft. On 2/22/12, a Brown Street resident reported that a UPS package delivered to his front porch had been removed during the day on 2/3/12.

February 23, 2012: Burglary. On 2/23/12, at approximately 4:03 pm, officers responded to an Overlook Terrace residence on a report of a burglary. Officers determined that unknown suspect(s) had gained entry through the side door of the residence and removed an HP Laptop computer, three X-Box video game controllers, multiple X- Box video games, and a Kenneth Cole watch.

February 24, 2012: Burglary. On 2/24/12, officers responded to the Maplewood Library located at 51 Baker Street on an alarm activation. As officers were checking the exterior of the building, Officer J. Lareau heard the sound of an object hitting the ground, which was later determined to be the cash register from inside the Library. Officer Lareau then observed a suspect running across a footbridge that leads into Memorial Park. An extensive search for the suspect was conducted with negative results. The cash register was recovered at the scene.

The school board race is heating up to be a real challenge as the deadline to enter approaches today at 4 p.m.

Veteran board member and former School Board President Mark Gleason told PATCH he will not run again and has endorsed incumbent Wayne Eastman, who is up for re-election with incumbent Jennifer Payne-Parish.

But Eastman has broken ranks somewhat with Payne-Parrish, running with challengers Madhu Pai and Jeff Bennett against her.

The election is set for April 17.

Star-Ledger reports that dozens of school boards are moving to November elections while our board nixes the idea despite a strong push from Maplewood's Township Committee:

More than 400 school districts have moved their elections from April to November — one of the most sweeping changes to scholastic politics in state history as most residents will no longer vote on their districts’ budgets.

Not that many residents have taken advantage of the opportunity to vote on school budgets. Since 1984, there has been only one year in which more than 20 percent of registered voters cast ballots. That was 2010, when Gov. Chris Christie lobbied voters to reject their districts’ budgets in protest of ever-rising property taxes.

By contrast, 26 percent of registered voters cast ballots in the general election this past in November, and that was the lowest ever recorded. This year, because of the presidential race, the turnout is expected to be significantly higher.

Come on school board folks and give up your control that keeps voters away and costs more money. No excuses

Looks like South Orange-Maplewood schools will get a 23% increase in state funding, according to figures released this week by the state.

They come after Gov. Chris Christie announced he would boost school aid in his new budget.

The boost raises the state aid from $3,310,958 this current 2011-2012 school year to $4,075,898 for next school year, 2012-2013.

That is an increase of $764, 940 or about 23%.

SCHOOL BOARD MOVES TOWARD DE-LEVELING

After months of listening to school administration explain and answer questions about proposed changes to middle school and high school class levels, the South Orange-Maplewood Board of Education finally got down to the business of discussing the proposals at Wednesday night's meeting. The board will take official action on the proposals at its regular March 5 meeting.

A proposal to reduce the number of levels in the middle schools and phase in the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme was introduced in December. Then, a proposal torestructure levels at Columbia High School was unveiled in January. Subsequently, three public meetings — for which questions were pre-submitted as well as taken from index cards filled out by audience members — were held in December, January and February. On Wednesday, the majority of the BOE signaled support for both proposals. Board President Beth Daugherty said that she “personally thinks this is the right time to move forward” with the proposals.

Gov.Chris Christie release a budget Tuesday that claims to offer big improvements in school funding.

The Star-Ledger stated:

Gov. Chris Christie Tuesday threw money behind his promise to support education in New Jersey, proposing in his budget address an increase of $108 million for higher education and a nearly $213 million more for K-12 school districts.

Christie called higher education the "key to advancement" and proposed increasing both the amount the state provides for financial assistance to students and the funding it gives to colleges and universities.

The story also chose to ask our own Superintendent Brian Osborne what he thought of the plan. His views: "We’re waiting now on what the governor’s determination means for our districts."

Considering we get only 8% of our school budget from the state compared to a statewide average of 24%, I hope we do get more.

NICE MOMENT FROM TC MEETING, EXTRA EFFORT

A nice moment at the end of last night's Township Committee meeting.

If you stuck around for the last public comment, you saw an elderly woman from the Ukraine who spoke, in a thick accent, about her property tax troubles.

Instead of just listening and letting her go when her time limit was up, Mayor Vic De Luca, township officials and the TC offered a kind ear and vowed to help give her appeals the proper review through the tax assessor.

Another example of how they give the extra effort.

TC NOT BACKING DOWN ON SCHOOL BOARD ELECTION MOVE

The Township Committee plans to again take up the issue of moving school board elections to November, despite the school board opposing the move and the South Orange Village Trustees declining to take up the issue.

The TC said last night that it will use part of its Saturday 9 a.m. budget meeting to look at what to do and possibly consider a ballot measure to move the elections. Good for them, keep it up.

NO SMOKING BAN APPROVED, POOL FEE HIKES ON HOLD

The Township Committee on Tuesday night gave a final unanimous vote to a ban on smoking in public parks, playgrounds and within 25 feet of public buildings.

But the TC delayed approval of new pool fees after a request to change the fees slightly to make them lower for senior citizens and to allow caregivers to be included in family plans for eight or more.

The changes will be advertised and put forth at the next TC meeting on March 6.

PROPOSED ORDINANCE GIVES FEE CUTS TO VOLUNTEERS

An interesting ordinance being introduced tonight at the Township Committee meeting gives a well-deserved break to some local volunteers.

According to the ordinance, folks who volunteer with the police and fire auxiliary, the community emergency response team or the First Aid Squad for at least a year would get a half-price fee for the Maplewood Pool and a fee cut for pet licenses and building fee permits.

February 13, 2012: Recovered Stolen Property. On 2/13/12, officers responded to a Plymouth Avenue home on a report of recovered stolen property. Officers spoke with the owner of a bicycle that had been reported stolen on 11/07/11 who indicated that the bicycle had been returned to him by an anonymous male. The male told the owner that he had purchased the bicycle at a garage sale in Irvington, and had returned the bicycle after seeing notices that the owner had posted throughout the neighborhood.

February 14, 2012: Warrant Arrest. On 2/14/12, Officers J. DeFazio and B. Rodrigues responded to Jacoby Street on a report of individuals believed to be smoking marijuana in the street. Although officers found no evidence of narcotics, officers did recognize a suspected wanted person, Sydir Baptist, 20, of 16 Jacoby Street Maplewood. Officers confirmed the active warrant, placed Baptist in custody, and transported him to police headquarters for processing.

February 15, 2012: Graffiti. On 2/15/12, officers responded to Borden Park on a report of graffiti in the park. Officers observed that a tree had been spray painted with white paint. The Department of Public Works was notified.

February 17, 2012: Burglary. On 2/17/12, officers and detectives responded to a Mosswood Terrace residence on a report of a burglary. A large stone was apparently used to break a rear French door window allowing the suspect(s) to unlock the door. Upon entry, the actor(s) removed an Apple Mac Pro laptop computer valued at approximately $1500.00. The Detective Bureau is investigating.

February 20, 2012: Narcotics Arrest. On 2/20/12, Officers J. DeFazio and B. Rodrigues were patrolling in the area of Tuscan Road and Hilton Ave. Officers observed a suspected wanted person, Daniel Exantus, 20, of 65 Franklin Ave. Maplewood. Officers conducted a field interview and subsequently confirmed the active warrants. Officers also discovered that Exantus was in possession of (4) small bags of suspected marijuana. He was transported to police headquarters where he posted bail and was released.

Seton Hall received 12 points each from Hofstra-bound guard Dallas Anglin and senior forward Spencer Mosley and junior forward Tom Lacey added 11 second-half points as Seton Hall won for the 13th time in its last 14 games under first-year head coach Kevin Williams.

"Coming into this game, our coaches said we have to play how they play, and play with the intensity that they were going to bring," Anglin said. "This is their Tournament of Champions, and we knew they were going to come hard at us and I'm just happy for the win."

Seton Hall Prep led at the half, 32-26, and went on a 10-3 run, keyed by four points each from Weisz and Mosley, to take a 42-29 lead with 2:47 left in the third quarter en route to a 45-35 lead heading into the fourth. Columbia cut the lead to eight, 47-39, after a Maxim Michel basket with 6:10 left in the fourth quarter, but would come no closer.

Michel led Columbia with 12 points, freshman Michael Runcie added 10 and Robert Gordon chipped in with nine, including six in the first quarter, for Columbia, which dropped only its second game in its last 11.

NJ Spotlight posted a great map showing the average property taxes for each municipality.

Not a surprise Maplewood is above the state average with a $13,118 average per home tax compared to the state average of $7,519.

News-Record has a great item about the Maplewood Country Club challenging its tax assessment.

As the second-largest property taxpayer in town, this could mean something.

The paper reports:

The Maplewood Country Club, the town’s second largest taxpayer, is challenging the numbers the township uses to calculate its property-tax bill.

The club, whose property spans some 89 acres, appealed its tax assessment of roughly $17.4 million in March, court records showed Feb. 14.

Records on file in Town Hall put the assessments at a little less than those contained in court records — at about $17.2 million. Last year the club paid $538,640 in property taxes, township records showed.

Mayor Vic De Luca said Tuesday that there is “substantial” difference in what the two sides think the figure should be. He declined to elaborate, saying the township generally does not discuss legal matters.

Early word is that the South Orange Village Trustees Wednesday night declined to vote in favor of a school district election move from April to November.

The School Board, naturally, voted against it last week, while the Maplewood Township Committee approved.

The Maplewood Democratic Party apparently likes its status as the lone controller in township elections.

So much so, they held their first Hall of Fame induction, as Patch reports:

The group has churned out a steady stream of successful candidates. At its first-ever Hall of Fame induction on January 31 at Highland Place Bar and Grill, MDC Chair Ian Grodmank and Vice Chair Garnet Hall presented a program that detailed how committee members had gone on to become:

District Leaders, Mayors, Vice Mayors, Deputy Mayors, Township Committee Members, Secretary of Senate, Chairman, Vice Chairman, Environmental Specialist. Some of them served over 30 years of service to our community.
Many of them held multiple positions on multiple councils and committees. Maplewood is a great place to live today because the level of commitment and service of many.

Honored and inducted on January 31:

Honorable Nick and Mary Romano — over 30 years of service
Honorable Frank McQuade — over 30 years of service
Honorable Ellen Davenport — Former Maplewood Mayor, Former NJ Secretary of the Senate
Honorable David Huemer — Former Township Committee member

No objection to the group's work. Its monopoly on the TC is due primarily to strong leadership in Mayor De Luca and Dem Chair Ian Grodman. But some might say it is better to keep a low profile and enjoy the success quietly. Still, if the Republicans at least put up a fight, they might have a complaint.

TEENS ACROSS FROM CHS APPEARED TO BE SMOKING POT

At least five or six teens were spotted at the gas station across from Columbia High School smoking what appeared to be a marijuana cigarette today.

The youngsters passed it among themselves and would have been photographed by me, but seeking not to post under-aged people without permission, I declined.

Perhaps cops could stake out the spot tomorrow.

Police issued this Monday night:

February 3, 2012: Burglary Arrest. On 2/3/12, Stephan Farrar, 20, of 876 South 18^th Street, Newark was arrested and charged with burglarizing a Maplewood Avenue restaurant on 1/21/12. The arrest was the result of a comprehensive investigation conducted by the members of MPD Detective Bureau, with Detective Robert Smith at the lead. Detectives utilized a combination of traditional investigative methods and cutting edge technologies to identify the suspect. The investigation is still active at this time.

February 4, 2012: Graffiti. On 2/4/12, officers responded to Maplecrest Park on a report of graffiti in the park. Officers observed that four trees and a park bench had been written on. The Department of Public Works was notified.

February 8, 2012: Warrant Arrest. On 2/8/12, Officer J. Moen conducted a traffic stop of a Chevy Van on Springfield Avenue for a violation of failure to inspect. The driver of the vehicle, identified as Ashton Spencer, 53, of 157 Pierson Street in Orange, NJ was found to have an active warrant out of the Essex County Sheriff’s Office for Civil Contempt. Upon confirmation, Spencer was arrested and transported to headquarters for processing.

February 9, 2012: Burglary. On 2/9/12, a Mosswood Terrace resident reported that shortly after 8:48 am, she heard a door slam. She initially assumed it was a family member returning home, but soon realized that a Mac Book Pro laptop computer was missing from the residence. The Detective Bureau is investigating.

February 9, 2012: Burglary. On 2/9/12, a Norfolk Avenue resident reported that unknown suspect(s) had entered the residence through unlocked French style doors and had removed a Dell brand laptop computer from a first floor room. The incident reportedly occurred between 7:30 am and 6:30 pm.

February 9, 2012: Burglary. On 2/9/12, a Boyden Avenue resident reported that unknown suspect(s) had burglarized the residence between the hours of 11:00 am and 3:32 pm. The resident reported that numerous items of jewelry were missing, including a silver Gucci necklace with a cross pendant, a silver Movado watch, a Coach square face watch and a white pearl necklace. The Detective Bureau is investigating.

STATE SENATE APPROVES GAY MARRIAGE

Star-Ledger reports:

TRENTON — The state Senate passed a bill legalizing gay marriage this afternoon by a vote of 24-16.

Two Republicans, Sen. Jennifer Beck (R-Monmouth) and Sen. Diane Allen (R-Burlington) voted yes on the bill.

“We have some among us who are separate and not equal,” Beck said.

The bills passage elicited a round of applause from those in the audience wearing blue in support of the bill, which Gov. Chris Christie has promised to veto. Sen. Ray Lesniak (D-Union), a co-sponsor, raised his arm in victory and said “Yes!”

Two Democrats, Sen. Ronald Rice (D-Essex) and Sen. Jeff Van Drew (D-Cape May), voted no.

The 24 votes in favor of the bill leaves supporters three votes short of the 27 votes they would need to override Christie’s veto.

After defeating fourth-seeded Don Bosco Prep in the first round of the NJSIAA/Bollinger tournament, 13th-seeded Montclair continues its quest to return to the state finals Tuesday against fifth-seeded Gov. Livingston.

It will be the first meeting between the teams this winter and should be very close. Montclair expects big things out of Chris Murphy on the sabre line and Chase Mitchell in foil, but the team will look to its epee line—arguably the strength of the team--to give better than it gets against a solid Gov. Livingston epee unit.

If Montclair can get by Gov. Livingston it might have the momentum it needs against likely foe Columbia, the defending state champion, in the next round.

FENCERS TO WATCH

When the sixth seed, Watchung Hills, travels to face third-seeded Montgomery Tuesday in the NJSIAA/Bollinger tournament, three sabre fencers for Watchung Hills --Cole Degeorges, Alex Sadowski and Sampson Ho -- should have one thing on their mind: how to beat Montgomery’s Nick Sledeski.

Sledeski, the District 2 sabre champion, went 3-0 against those three in the teams' last meeting, a 14-13 battle that Montgomery won on Jan.10. One sabre victory from either of the three against Sledeski could be the difference between Watchung Hills advancing to the next round or becoming bystanders in the playoffs.

MATCH TO WATCH

Tenth-seeded Bernards will travel to face second-seeded Mendham in a battle of District 1 rivals Tuesday in the NJSIAA/Bollinger tournament in Mendham.

Mendham was dominant in the teams' last meeting, a 17-10 Mendham victory on Jan. 16, but Bernards would like nothing better than to spoil Mendham’s bid for a state championship.

Mendham holds a distinct edge in epee and hung in with Bernards enough in sabre last time out to stifle Bernards’ chances. If Mendham gets a repeat performance in sabre and the Campos brothers, Adam and Julian, hold the edge in foil, then the results will not change. If Bernards can strike in sabre and steal a few bouts in epee, then the tournament's second seed could be headed home early

CHS BOYS BASKETBALL MOVES ON IN COUNTY TOURNEY

The fourth-seeded Columbia High School boys' varsity basketball team will meet top-seeded and defending champion Seton Hall Prep in the Essex County Tournament semifinals doubleheader at West Orange High School on Saturday Feb. 18.
The Cougars defeated No. 12 seed Bloomfield Tech, 63-42, in the quarterfinals on Saturday Feb. 11 at CHS to notch their eight win in the past nine games and ninth in the last 11 games to improve to 16-4.

Senior guard Justin Martin led the Cougars with 20 points. Leading 15-10, the Cougars went on a 12-0 run to start the second quarter to extend it to 27-10.

Senior Maxim Michel, junior Evans Osuji and sophomore David Runcie each finished with nine points for the Cougars.

Bloomfield Tech fell to 14-9.

The Cougars are 2-0 against Bloomfield Tech this season. CHS defeated Bloomfield Tech, 54-40, on Jan. 19.

SOUTH ORANGE WILL DECIDE SCHOOL BOARD ELECTION SWITCH

Looks like it is up to the South Orange Village Trustees to make things right in the school board election dispute after the school board wimped out and declined to move the vote to November.

Maplewood TC approved of a switch on Tuesday, so now the S.O. governing body takes on the issue Wednesday night.

Show up and urge them to do the right thing (agenda below) and stop letting the school board control the voter turnout with April elections.
